Adam’s Thoughts
Self-revelation.
That’s an interesting thing.
As we go through life, we figure out so many things about ourselves.
Sometimes it comes from experience.
Sometimes education.
Sometimes we seek it out through coaching, advice from a friend, therapy, or enrolling in some kind of course.
But somewhere along the way, we have these revelations about ourselves.
This awareness.
Carl Jung said:
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
Think about that.
How many things in our lives do we leave up to fate?
But are they really fate?
Or are our unconscious actions, decisions, emotions, feelings, and beliefs actually directing our lives?
We’re just unaware that we’re the ones doing the directing.
Which means, ironically, our lives are being directed by us—but not really at our direction.
That’s a strange thought.
And maybe one worth spending some time on.
Adam’s Lesson
Thinking about this made me realize something about what Tom and I have spent years building at Atomic Business Coaching.
In many ways, we’re helping effectuate exactly the change Jung was talking about.
Making the unconscious conscious.
Helping someone become aware of how they’re controlling and directing their life without even realizing they’re doing it.
And the lesson for me is that most of us simply don’t have the space to do that.
We’re busy.
And it’s a catch-22.
To become successful, you usually have to take a massive amount of action.
Then, to maintain that success and continue growing, you compound those actions.
More responsibilities.
More decisions.
More people.
More things requiring your attention.
And somewhere in all of that, there isn’t much space left to think bigger, better, more effectively, or more efficiently.
What Tom and I have really created for our clients is that space.
A place where we can help lift the fog.
Where someone can experience a little self-recognition.
A little self-revelation.
Where they can finally meet the person they’ve become after putting in all this effort.
Understand what they truly want now.
And then determine what actions actually need to be taken to make that happen.
There’s something wonderful about watching someone meet themselves.
It’s almost like meeting an old friend.
Maybe even like having a pen pal for years and finally meeting them in person.
Except it’s more intimate than that.
Because somewhere underneath it all, you kind of always knew this person was there.
You may have trusted it.
You may have believed in it.
You just didn’t realize how real it actually was.
I don’t know if this is a gift I’ve been given or simply the result of years of consistently trying to get better at it.
But man, am I happy I get to do it.
And whether you work with us or not, I think there’s a lesson here.
Give yourself some space.
You don’t need the perfect coach, the perfect questions, or some sophisticated process to begin.
You can start as a novice.
Ask yourself questions you normally don’t have time to ask.
Sit with the answers a little longer than you normally would.
Start uncovering some of the things buried underneath all that action.
Because the more you can make the unconscious conscious, the more you can stop calling things fate...
and start consciously directing where your life goes.
See you next Saturday,
Adam
